Share the Road: Bike Awareness Month

May is a special month for bikers – and for biking as a whole as everyone is encouraged to give the mode of transportation a try. However, biking comes with its fair share of roadside dangers, and it is necessary for motorists to be fully aware of their rights and legal coverage for the safest experience.

The Origin of Bike Awareness Month

The League of American Bicyclists started the annual celebration of Bike Awareness month in 1956. Its motto was for a bicycle-friendly America. During the month of May each year, campaigns on the benefits of cycling are conducted throughout the nation. Cycling is promoted as an enjoyable mode of transportation that reduces carbon footprint while keeping commuters healthy.

Additionally, cyclists are informed of the basic road safety rules that will steer them away from danger on the streets. According to the National Safety Council, the number of preventable deaths from bicycling accidents remains unchanged but the number of casualties has risen by 30% over the last 10 years. This suggests that the safety measures and practices employed by motorists and cyclists can go a long way toward reducing overall cycling-related accidents.

Sharing the Road in Safety

Cyclists and motorists can do their part in avoiding or mitigating the impact of traffic collisions. These measures include often-overlooked riding procedures such as the donning of a well-fitted cycling helmet and keeping to designated lanes.

While it is important for motorists to watch out for cyclists, there are some basic essentials that cyclists should observe while on the road. For instance, cyclists should always practice all traffic rules while they are on the road, just like any other motorist. This includes signaling when changing lanes, stopping at traffic lights, and moving according to the flow of traffic.

Cyclists may access the league of American Bicyclist’s round-up of cycling laws in their respective states for a clearer understanding of the rules and regulations in their area.

Knowing Your Rights

While bike awareness is the time of year to embrace cycling as an activity, it is also vital for cyclists to be fully aware of their rights on the road. Personal injury remains an often overlooked problem, where injured parties fail to receive the compensation they deserve. In the eyes of the law, personal injury refers to any situation whereby an individual is physically hurt by the actions (often through negligence) of another person.

Injured parties may require extensive medical treatment, which includes costly surgical procedures, specialist consultations, and long-term rehabilitation.
